This weekend I’ll be competing in the Buffalo German Festival Strongman Competition hosted by the Buffalo Heavies. I’m not sure of the exact weights, times or distances but I believe the events will be as follows:
- Log press 250-260 lbs. for as many repetitions as possible (clean once then press overhead for reps).
- Keg carry for distance then put into wheelbarrow and take back to start. I’m thinking 250 lbs. kegs and not sure how many.
- Crucifix (hold a 30 lbs. ¼ keg in each hand straight out to side for time).
- 250 lbs. Husafell carry for distance.
- Farmers walk 275 lbs. in each hand for a set distance (best time wins).
- Seated arm over arm truck pull with rope for a set distance (best time wins).
This will be the 1st “pure” strongman contest that I’ve done since the 2008 NAS West Virginia’s Strongest Man where I placed 4th overall. That contest was one of my worst performances ever and it was shortly thereafter that I found out I had some crazy disease called sarcoidosis. According to doctors it is a rare disease that has no known cause or cure. Sarcoidosis attacks mainly ones organs but can also wreak havoc to the eyes, skin and joints. I had issues with mostly my lungs, lymph-nodes, and joints so it really killed my strongman aspirations. I tried to continue training but then completely snapped my left bicep muscle in early 2010. I think it had something to do with the sarcoidosis but who knows as I was already in a weakened state.
I praise God daily that I haven’t had any symptoms since early 2011 when I got back into competitive powerlifting. Even though this is not a sanctioned event, I’m still pretty excited about it since it’s been 5 years since my last strongman contest. I’m a little older, a lot wiser, and almost at my strongest. Since I dropped several pounds I’m not quite where I used to be in strength but I’m pretty close. To God be all the glory!
